Mid-Amateur Championship Finds New Date

February 7, 2017

Same Championship Format, New Date

The FSGA Mid-Amateur Championship now finds itself in a new May date, as opposed to the fall date it has occupied since 1988, the 7th playing of the Championship.

Over the years, the October date has been threatened by numerous hurricanes and tropical storms, falling at the tail end of hurricane season. The 1998, 2004 & 2016 competitions all saw rounds canceled or formats changed to work around the weather.

The fall date also was always just before or after the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship, causing many of Florida’s top players to miss out on the state championship if they qualified for the national championship, due to missing too much time for work.

The 2017 Championship will be contested May 18-21, at John’s Island West, in Sebastian (Vero Beach). John’s Island Club also hosted the 2012 Mid-Amateur Championship, captured by Rick Woulfe (pictured below), and also hosted the 2015 USGA Mid-Amateur Championship, which saw Florida native Marc Dull make a wonderful run to the finals before falling in 34 holes. The Tom Fazio designed West Course is the third golf course of John’s Island Club. Sitting alone a few miles from the main clubhouse and North & South Courses, Fazio routed 18 holes over 300 acres of a North/South sand ridge that runs through Vero Beach. The course offers unique elevation changes not seen often in Florida and has no homes built on it.
