Armstrong & Finster Win in Playoff

October 8, 2017

The Pine Barrens Course at World Woods Golf Club would play host to the Mid-Senior Four-Ball Championship (North) a little later than expected due to the effects of Hurricane Irma. In all, 39 two-man teams teed it up Saturday morning with hopes of winning the 2017 Mid-Senior Four-Ball (North) Championship. With the course in excellent condition and providing players with a risk-reward environment, teams had the potential to shoot low numbers.

After Saturday's first round, not one but two teams made their way to the clubhouse to sign for ten-under par rounds of 61. Michael Finster & Brian Armstrong were the first in the clubhouse and signed what looked to be a runaway round. What's even more impressive is Michael Finster shot a 62 on his own ball, breaking the previous tournament course record on the Pine Barrens Course held by PGA Tour standout Phil Mickelson. Mickelson shot a 63 in the Shell's Wonderful World of Golf in 2002 when he played against David Toms. However, their four-shot clubhouse lead would be erased when the team of Daniel Debra & Don Whittemore carded the second ten under-par round of the day. Heading into the final round, the teams of Finster/Armstrong & Debra/Whittemore would be battling it out for the championship.

The final round was a battle that would not finish on the final hole. Both teams backed up their ten under-par first rounds with four under-par rounds of 67, requiring extra holes to crown new Mid-Senior Four-Ball (North) Champions. Returning to the 18th hole, the team of Debra & Whittemore struggled, leaving the door open for Finster & Armstrong. The duo would capitalize, sealing their victory with a birdie on the first play-off hole. With their win on Sunday, they also earn an exemption into the 2018 Four-Ball Championship.

In the First Flight, FSGA standout and Southeastern Challenge Team member, Robert Bechtol and his partner, Steve Carter, claimed victory after backing up their one over-par first round of 72 with a six under-par, 65.
