Four Move on in Hershey

September 11, 2012

Hershey, Pennsylvania is proving to be a sweet spot for four Florida women as they have advanced to the second round of match play at the US Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.  Round of 32 Matches will begin Tuesday morning at 8:00 AM, and will be immediately followed by Round of 16 Matches in the afternoon.

Mary Jane Hiestand of Naples, defeated Peggy Brady of Denver, North Carolina, 1 up in Monday's opening match.  Hiestand was never down during the match, playing very consistent and solid golf.  Hiestand will next face medalist Lisa Schlesinger of Laytonsville, Maryland, in the Round of 32 Matches.

Fellow Floridian, Therese Quinn of Jacksonville, defeated Annette Gaiotti of Salt Lake City.  The match was back-and-forth the entire day, with Quinn being down two separate times.  Quin took advantage of Gaiotti's missteps on the back nine and was able to close out the match, defeating Gaiotti 2 and 1.

Taffy Brower's extensive experience proved helpful, as she defeated Susan Beaupied of Raleigh, North Carolina, 2 and 1.  Beaupied was two up on Brower at one point, but Brower's birdie on the par three eighth gave her the momentum she needed going into the back nine.

Three-time past champion, Diane Lang of Weston, Florida, was defeated by fellow Floridian Lynda Case, of Fort Myers.  Case gained a quick 1 up lead after the first hole when Lang opened the match with a bogey.  Case was never down during Monday's match, defeating Lang with a final 1 up.  Lynda Case is the defending 2012 FSGA Senior Women's Amateur Champion.

The starting field of 132 players will play two rounds of stroke play Sept. 8-9, with the low 64 scorers advancing to match play.  The schedule is as follows:

Sept. 10 (Monday) – First round of match play
Sept. 11 (Tuesday) – Second and third rounds of match play
Sept. 12 (Wednesday) – Quarterfinals and semifinals, match play
Sept. 13 (Thursday) – Championship match

Hershey Country Club (West Course) will be set up at 6,220/6,147 yards and will play to a par of 37-37-74.  The 2012 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur will be the first USGA competition conducted at Hershey Country Club.  The USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship is open to female amateurs who have reached their 50th birthday by Sept. 8 and who have a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 18.4.
