Florida Women in Position at Harder Hall

January 4, 2013

Thursday's first round came with a nearly three-hour morning fog delay at the 58th Harder Hall Women's Invitational and only a portion of the field completed.  However, multiple Florida women outlasted the long day and now see themselves in contention heading into Friday's round. The Harder Hall Invitational is being conducted at Harder Hall Golf Club in Sebring, Florida.  The field consists of many highly ranked and accomplished women amateur golfers from around the world.

Erica Popson, of Davenport, fired a 1-under par 71 during Thursday's round, placing her only five shots back of the lead.  Popson was a past Florida Junior Tour (FJT) player and was the 2008 FSGA Junior Player-of-the-Year.  Fellow Floridian Mary Jane Hiestand, of Naples, shot 72 in their opening round.  Hiestand had an outstanding 2012 season, capping it off by being recognized as the 2012 Women's Senior Player-of-the-Year.  At the other end of the spectrum, 11 year-old Latanna Stone also shot 72 during Thursday's round, placing her only six back from the lead.  Stone is the youngest player to ever qualify for the U.S. Women’s Amateur at age 10.

The Harder Hall Invitational is the first Championship of the Orange Blossom Tour that also include the South Atlantic Amateur (SALLY), the Ione D. Jones/Doherty Championship, and the Women’s International Four-Ball Championship, all carrying a tremendous amount of history and prestige. The Harder Hall Invitational will be conducted Thursday, January 3 through Sunday, January 6, 2013.
