Barber & Miller Win at Amelia National

March 16, 2014

The Florida Junior Tour returned to Amelia National this weekend, this time for a 13-15 Age Division event. The first round saw beautiful weather and calm winds setting up for fair scoring conditions.

In the Girls’ Division, Lauren Miller, of Niceville, jumped out to the first round lead with a 2-under par 70; posting the only red number for the girls.  Brittany Shin, of Cape Coral carded an even-par 72 to sit in 2nd.  Lara van Staden, of Winter Springs would round out the final group for round two after carding a 74.

In the Boys’ Division, five players would log under par rounds on day one. Tyler Strafaci, of Davie and Garrett Barber, of West Palm Beach led the way at 4-under par 68.  Alberto Martinez, of Weston would lurk one stroke back, after a 3-under par 69.  Phillip Barbaree, of Shreveport, LA and Thomas Allkins, of Lake Mary fashioned 1-under par 71’s.

The story of round two would prove to be the wind. From the time players arrived at the course, the winds were howling.  In the Girls’ Division, that would not stop leader Lauren Miller.  Miller would birdie her first hole of the day, #10 and go out in 3-over 39 combined with a birdie on #7 on the front side for an even-par 36 to post a 145 total (70-75--145), good enough for an eight stroke victory over Brittany Shin (72-81--153).  Ramya Meenakshisundaram, of Jacksonville would log a 75 in round two, 154 total (79-75--154) to place third.

In the Boys’ Division, first round leader Garrett Barber would go out in 2-under to take the lead at the turn. After a 1-under 35 on the back, his 69 total would give Barber a 6 stroke victory at 7-under par 137 (68-69--137).  Alberto Martinez took runner-up honors at 1-under par 143 (69-74--143).  First round co-leader Tyler Strafaci would shoot a final round 76, leaving him at even-par 144 total to capture third place honors.

A big thanks to Amelia National Golf Club, for hosting their second event of the season, and being a supporter of the Florida Junior Tour.

The Florida Junior Tour will continue next weekend, March 22-23, with the 13-15 Division heading to Ruskin, at Cypress Creek Golf Club while the 16-18 Division will be tested at Timacuan Golf Club in Lake Mary.
