June 15, 2014

Eighty-four junior golfers traveled to Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach this weekend for a rare Florida Junior Tour event in the summer. Playing on the Links course at Bear Lakes, the players were welcomed with perfect course conditions and very hot and humid weather.

In the Boys 13-15 age division, Sachin Kumar took a three shot lead after the first round. Kumar shot a 69 (-3) while Alberto Martinz, Hamilton Long, and Anthony Wells posted even par 72's.

In the final round, Kumar continued his dominance carding another 69 for a tournament total of 138 (-6). He made birdies on holes 3, 8, 9, 10 & 11. He also holed-out from the fairway on the 6th hole for an eagle. Brandon Mancheno shot roundss of 73-70--143 to finish in second place while Alberto Martinez shot rounds of 72-72--144 to finish in third place. This was Kumar's second win of the year.

In the Girls 16-18 age division, Cristine Lee, Mary Janiga, and Emily Black all shot rounds of 75 in the first round to tie for the lead. After the final round, four girls found themselves in a tie for first. Emily Black (75-78), Mary Janiga (75-78), Cristine Lee (75-78), and Kendall Johnson (77-76) needed to pay extra holes to determine the winner. The girls headed to the par 4 1st hole where Black, Janiga, and Lee made pars while Johnson made a 5 and finished tied for second place. The three remaining girls went to the par 5 2nd hole where Janiga made a par, but when Black and Lee both failed to get up & down from the greenside bunker Janiga earned the victory. This is Mary Janiga's first FJT win this year.

In the Girls 13-15 age division, Hannah Leiner and Gabrielle Correia tied for the lead with 75's in the first round despite each player in Leiner's group receiving a one-stroke penalty for a breach of the pace of play policy.

Hannah Leiner started her final round on the 10th hole. She made birdie on the 11th hole and then eagled the short par 4 15th. She added a couple more birdies on the 17th and 7th holes to post rounds of 75-70--145 to earn her first FJT title of the year. Dana Williams shot 79-71--150 to finish in second place and Gabriele Correia shot 75-76--151 to finish in third place.
