Lench Vaults in World Rankings After Win

January 7, 2015

The final updated amateur ranking list of 2014 has been released by the World Amateur Golf Ranking system and five players from Florida are in the top 60.

The current state amateur champion and junior golfer, Gabriel Lench, from Lake Mary, jumped from being ranked 396 to 58th after winning the South Beach International Amateur in late December. Lench won the 97th Florida State Amateur Championship last June, finished 5th at the Florida Boys' Junior Championship and then led the Florida team to a 2nd place finish at the USGA State Team Championship. Lench was named the Florida Junior Player of the Year at the FSGA's Annual Dinner last November. He also won two Florida Junior Tour events in 2014 and recently committed to play for Liberty University after high school. Click here to see more on Gabriel.

The 2013 state amateur champion and junior golfer, Sam Horsfield, from Davenport, remains in the top 30 with a final ranking of 26th. Horsfield won the Florida Boys' Junior Championship back in 2010 and earned Junior Player of the Year in 2013. Horsfield joined Lench on the Florida Team at the USGA State Championship and contributed to our second place finish. He has committed to play for the University of Florida after high school. The remaining three players in the top 60 are: Jorge Garcia (42nd), MJ Maguire (39th) and Jack Maguire (44th). Still a junior golfer, Jorge was once a dominant player on the Florida Junior Tour, but now competes in mostly national tournaments, including several championships around the world. He is committed to play for the University of Florida.

MJ and Jack Maguire are brothers and both played heavily on the Florida Junior Tour. MJ, the older of the two, played for the University of Florida and then transferred to the University of North Florida. The younger brother Jack was a late bloomer on the Florida Junior Tour, but then became a top player and went on to play for Florida State University.
