Junior Spotlight - Andrew Kozan

January 20, 2015

Andrew Kozan has played some pretty special golf lately, and put the icing on the cake Monday, capturing the AJGA Junior Puerto Rico Open at Trump International Golf Club, in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.  With the victory Kozan earns an exemption into the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open, March 5-8, 2015. Kozan follows past Florida Junior Tour member and current University of Virginia Freshman, Austen Truslow, of Lake Mary, who captured the 2014 Junior Puerto Rico Open in earning the PGA Tour exemption last year.

Kozan started off the fall finishing 2nd in the August FJT at Via Mizner (13-15). He would go on to win September's event at Vero Beach Country Club (13-15). In October, Kozan lead his team at The King's Academy to a second place finish at the Honda High School Invitational, while earning Individual Medalist Honors over Southeast Florida's top players. Kozan would go on to finish top-five in the FHSAA Class 1A Boys Finals at Mission Inn in November. Later that month, playing up in the 16-18 age division, an exemption earned from winning the 2013 FJT Tour Championship, Kozan would beat the whole field at Worthington Country Club. Winning that event earned Kozan a spot in the 16-18 age division at the season ending FJT Tour Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

In familiar territory at Sawgrass, Kozan opened with an even par 72 on the Dye's Valley course, to sit just two strokes back heading into Sunday. On Sunday, as the leaders moved backwards, Kozan started hot making eagle on the par 5 2nd, and a birdie on the 4th to vault out to the lead. Making back-to-back bogeys on 6 and 7, Kozan still was in the hunt heading to the back nine. He navigated around the back nine at The PLAYERS Stadium course in 37 strokes, with just one bogey at the 12th. The smooth even par 72 on Sunday would be good enough for a one stroke victory and a second Tour Championship title for the then 15 year-old Kozan.

Turning 16 just before Christmas, Kozan would start out 2015 just as hot as he finished 2014. Andrew spent the first Sunday of 2015 at PGA National capturing the Junior Honda Classic by 8 strokes. The following week, he gave his verbal commitment to continue his golf career after high school at Auburn University.

This week in Puerto Rico, facing one of the AJGA's strongest fields, Kozan kept himself in the hunt opening with 71-68 over the weekend, to sit one behind the leader and play in the final group. On Monday, Kozan stole the show. Kozan would go out with a blemish free 33 (-3). After a bogey at the 10th, Kozan would find himself tied for the lead. Still tied through 14, Kozan would finish birdie, par, birdie, birdie, while his fellow competitors faltered, and win the tournament by 3 strokes. The victory earned Kozan an exemption into the 2015 PGA Tour Puerto Rico Open at Trump International Golf Club, March 5-8, 2015. 2014 FSGA Amateur Champion Gabriel Lench and 2014 Boys' Junior (13-15) Champion Tyler Strafaci also posted top 10 finishes in the Puerto Rico Junior Open.
