67's Launch Juniors to Victory

March 1, 2015

The Florida Junior Tour 13-15 division made it through the weekend nearly unscathed after discouraging weather forecasts, to crown two winners.  Congratulations to Alberto Martinez and Alyssa Lamoureux as they both returned to the winner’s circle.

Round one saw a pair of bogey-free 67’s sit atop their respective scoreboards.  Weston native, Alberto Martinez and Alyssa Lamoureux, of Seminole, rolled in five birdies each to lead by a combined eleven shots.  Trailing Martinez in the boys’ division was Evan Sun, owner of the lone other under par round of day one with a score of 71.  Johnny Bai and Manuel Girona both turned in even-par 72’s.  In the girls’ division, Ramya Meenakshisundaram carded a 74 and was joined in the final group on day two by Julia Towne following her round one score of 76.

An impressive battle took place in the final grouping of the boys’ division.  Girona started the day five strokes behind Martinez but then birdied three of his first five holes to close the gap.  Unfortunately for Girona, Martinez also recorded a couple of birdies en route to a front-nine 34.  After a few bogeys for Martinez and birdies on holes 12 and 14 for Girona, the two were tied.  Martinez then seized the lead with a birdie on the par-5 15th, and would be crowned champion.  Finally, Calvin Sierota carded a final round 69 to tie Girona for the low round of the day and Walker King rebounded in a big way with a 71, besting his previous round by fourteen strokes.

The girls, while lacking for the same drama, did not lack for excellent play.  Alyssa Lamoureux cruised to a four shot victory after her superb 67 in the opening round.  Her closing round was highlighted by a birdie on the difficult 17th hole - one of only two for the entire day on the 17th.   Mimi Chen and Auston Kim charged toward the top of the leaderboard with the only two under-par rounds of the day for the ladies.  Chen rolled in two birdies to go along with a bogey for a one-under 71.  Kim recorded four birdies on Sunday to finish the day with a 70 and a third place finish for the tournament.

The next Florida Junior Tour stop for ages 13-15 will be at West Orange Country Club on March 21-22.  We look forward to seeing each of you there!
