Mid-Amateur Four-Ball Championships Play at North & South Sites

The North Championship is being played at Golden Ocala Golf and Equestrian Club and Miromar Lakes Beach and Golf Club is hosting the South Championship this weekend May 29-30. 

Higgens and Stevens, of Ponte Vedra Beach, lead the North after firing a 64. In a tie for second, Mark Leetzow, of Sarasota, and Chris Muscara, from Bradenton, and the team of John Corzilius, of Englewood, and David Sutton, from Maitland, shot 66. Defending Champion, Steve Carter, of St. Augustine, and Andy Purnell, from Jacksonville,are currently in third shooting 68.  In the South Championship, Thomas Craig and David Haag, from Boynton Beach, and the duo from Palm Beach,Bruce Sands and Brian Fry, shot 65to lead the field. Tom Fiocchi, of Palm Beach Gardens, and Michael Nealy, from Boca Raton, recorded 66 to be one back from the leaders.  

The Mid-Amateur Four-Ball North Championship features 52 teams while the South is made up of 38 teams. Both North and South sites are 36 holes of four-ball stroke play. In four-ball stroke play, two competitors play as partners, each playing his own ball.  The lower score of the partners is the score for the hole. The field is flighted after 18 holes. To be eligible, players must be 25 years of age or older and members of the FSGA. 

Last year in the North Championship at Victoria Hills Golf Club in Deland, Steve Carter, of St. Augustine, and Andy Purnell, of Jacksonville, won in a playoff over Bret Bush, of Palm Beach Gardens, and Bret Voisin,of Orlando. Carter and Purnell carded a 65-70 as Bush and Voisin finished with a 66-69 to both score a 135 two-day total. In the South Championship at the Doral Golf Resort in Miami, brothers Juan and Julio Nutt, of Miami, shot a 69-63--132 total, on the infamous Blue Monster course.
