Match Play Semifinalists Determined

The semifinalists for the 2005 Mid-Amateur Match Play Championship have been determined after two rounds of match play at The Golden Bear Club at Keene’s Pointe in Orlando on Saturday, October 8, 2005.  The Championship continues through Sunday, October 9.  

In the round of 16, defending champion Steve Carter, of Jacksonville, defeated James Weick, of Fort Lauderdale, 5 and 3 to advance to the round of eight. Others to advance to the round of eight were Richard Maddox, of Panama City, who defeated James Wingerter, of Winter Park 4 and 3. Jeff Sunday, of Orlando defeated Ken Moody, of Ponte Vedra Beach, 2 and 1, while Jon Veneziano, of Mount Dora defeated Jackie Miller, Naples, 3 and 2. Also advancing all winning their respective matches were Scott Smith, of Ponte Vedra Beach, who defeated Pete Leveille, of Orlando, 3 and 2. Cap Caponi, Orlando defeated Bobby Barben, Avon Park, 2 up, while Bret Voisin, of Orlando, defeated Scott Kennedy, of Pompano Beach, 3 and 2. The last match of the morning round was Tommy Dudley, of Jacksonville, who defeated Dion Gonsalves, of Pembroke Pines, 3 and 2.  

In the quarterfinals match, Steve Carter, of Jacksonville, defeated Richard Maddox, 3 and 2. Jon Veneziano, of Mount Dora, defeated Jeff Sunday, Orlando, 5 and 4. In the third match of the day, Cap Caponi, from Orlando, defeated Scott Smith, of Ponte Vedra Beach, 3 and 1. Bret Voisin, of Orlando, beat Tommy Dudley, of Jacksonville, 3 and 2 making his way to the semifinals.   

The semifinals and finals will be played on Sunday, October 9. After nine qualifiers across the state, 90 players advanced to the Championship at Keene’s Pointe. The Championship consists of 36-holes of stroke play qualifying over the first two days with the lowest 16 advancing to the match play on Saturday and Sunday. To be eligible for the State Mid-Amateur, participants must be 25 years of age or older as of October 6, 2005.
