Parent-Child Championship

Walt Disney World Golf (Palm/Magnolia) - Lake Buena Vista

August 5-6, 2000

Wards Defend Their State Parent-Child Title

John and Johnny Ward shot 67-68-435 to defend their Florida State Parent-Child Championship title by one shot at the Bonnet Creek complex at Walt Disney World. The victory was their 4th in the last eight years.

Jupiter's Fred and Devin Harkness shot 69-67--136 to finish in second place, while Jacksonville’s Tim Freeland teamed with his father, Oliver, to finish in third with a 68-69--137. John, a 62-year old Winter Park resident, has teamed with his 38-year old son for 1993, 1995, 1999, and now 2000.

The championship was a modified alternate shot. Players hit their tee shot. Players then exchange and hit the other team member's ball. The team would then have to decide which ball to play. Once the decision is made, they alternate shots until the ball is in the hole.

In the 12 and under junior division played at Disney's Old Trail course, Longwood's James Byrd, Jr. and James Byrd, III accumulated 60 Stableford points to win by five points. They were also repeat champions. They also won the junior division title in 1998.

The junior division used the Stableford points method where points are awarded in relation to par.

The Florida State Parent-Child Championship is the ninth of 17 state championships conducted annually by the Florida State Golf Association.
