January 17-18, 2015

Baker and Conroy Win on Home Turf

The Florida Junior Tour, Boys and Girls 16-18 age division, finished the second tournament of 2015 with a hole-in-one on hole number six by Krit Oukosavanna and two new champions. Southwood Golf Club, in Tallahassee, hosted the January 17-18 FJT event where Bennett Baker and Teresa Conroy were victorious.

In the Boys 16-18 age division, Brandon Mancheno, of Jacksonville, and Brock Ochsenreiter, of Nashville, Tennessee, tied for the lead after round one with an impressive score of one under-par, 71. Bennett Baker, of Tallahassee, finished round one in second place, by one stroke, after posting an even par 72.

Mancheno, Ochsenreiter, and Baker battled closely in the final pairing on Sunday. Bennett and Brock played shot for shot on the front nine firing a two under-par score of 34. Brandon began to falter with bogeys on six and eight heading into the final nine holes. Baker lit a fire on the back nine with a birdie on hole 10 to pull even with Ochsenreiter and captured the lead with birdies on 11, 13, and 14. Brock fell behind with back to back bogies on holes 14 and 15, which lead him to a second place finish, four strokes short of first. Mancheno, victor of the 2014 Tour Championship, played solid on the back nine with birdies on hole 10 and 16, but finished in third place with a tournament total 144. Baker’s final round of 66 gave him a six under-par tournament total and his first FJT victory.

In the Girl’s 16-18 age division, Teresa Conroy, of Tallahassee, never let the lead out of sight, posting scores of 72-77, to win her first FJT event. After round one Alison Armstrong, of Tampa, finished two shots behind Conroy in second place with a score of 76. Armstrong struggled and fell to third place with a second round score of 80, tournament total 154. Hallianne Hobson, of Fort Myers, played solid in round two with 12 pars and a birdie to capture second place with a tournament total 153. Conroy started round two even par after nine holes and finished the tournament in first place by four strokes.

The FJT, 13-15 age division, travels to Brooksville Country Club, next weekend, January 24-25. This will be the first FJT event for the 13-15 age division in 2015.

The FJT visits Southwood Golf Club at least once every year and the tournament always has one of the strongest fields. Southwood is FSU's home course for the men's and women's golf teams and the coaches are almost always around during the tournament days watching potential recruits.

Travel to Tallahassee to compete on Southwood's tricky greens, then take advantage of being near FSU and tour the campus and historic city.

Southwood Golf Club is not a typical Florida-style course. Designed by Fred Couples, the par 72, 7,100+ layout consists of rolling fairways with some elevation changes and undulating putting greens.
