Spears Duo Wins Parent-Child Championship

Andy and Rick Spears shot a 12-under par 132 to win the two-day Florida State Parent-Child Championship at the Walt Disney World Resort.

Andy Spears, of Palm City, and Rick Spears, of Stuart, shot a 63-69 to win by 3 strokes. Scott and Bruce Scamehorn, of Winter Haven, were right behind the leaders shooting a 68-67, 135 total. The Scamehorn team claimed last year’s title shooting a 139.

Last year’s 10-11 Junior division winners, Scott and Diana Davis, of Pembroke Pines, played in this year’s regular division and came in first in their flight recording a 68-71, 139 total. The regular division was divided on Disney’s Eagle Pines and Osprey Ridge courses and played 36 holes of modified alternate shot. The field was split based upon the combined handicaps of the teams and flighted after 18 holes. This year’s 10-11 Junior division title went to Shaun and Mark Peterson, of Longwood, as they finished with a total of 54 points, 27 points on each day. In the 6-9 age group, a three-way tie was decided after two playoff holes. Andrew and Brendon McCarthy, of Hope Sound, made par on the second playoff hole to claim the title with 49 points. The Junior division played 9 holes of modified alternate shot format using the Stableford scoring at the Oak Trail executive course.

The Florida State Parent-Child Championship will be “magical” once again as it returns to Walt Disney World. Osprey Ridge, a Tom Fazio-design, has been named one of the “Top 10 Resort Courses in America” by Golf Magazine. Eagle Pines is an imaginative creation of Pete Dye. The professionals will test the Magnolia Course, home of the National Car Rental Golf Classic. The Parent-Child Championship is open to everyone. There is no maximum age limitation for parent or child. (A 40 year old is eligible to compete with his father.)

ELIGIBILITY

At least one entrant of each team must be a member of FSGA or FWSGA. One or both of the Professional Division team members must be a golf professional. There is no maximum age limitation for parent or child. Grandparents may also play with grandchildren.

ENTRY FEE

$290 for Regular and Professional Divisions ($280 for online entry) and $150 for Junior Division ($140 for online entry), which includes cart fee for tournament rounds, team picture, and awards. (Only two-person teams are permitted)

CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT

Regular Division will play 36 holes of modified alternate shot; Juniors play 9 holes of modified alternate shot using Stableford scoring each day. Teams will be grouped by combined handicap for day one groupings.

FLIGHTS

Regular Division - the field will be divided between the three courses based upon combined handicaps of the teams. After 18 holes, the field will be flighted (within course divisions).

DIVISIONS

There will not be any gender-based divisions, but four sets of tees will be utilized: Regular men, Regular women, jr./sr. men and jr./sr. women (Seniors age 55 and older will move up to play the same tee as the 12-14 year old juniors.)

NEW DIVISION - THE PRO DIVISION: Will play Magnolia Course each day. More information to be published.

COURSES

Regular division will play on Disney's Bonnet Creek courses - "Eagle Pines" and "Osprey Ridge" or Disney's "Magnolia." The junior division will play the "Oak Trail" executive course. Pro division will play the "Magnolia" course.

CARTS

Players are responsible for practice round cart fees.

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS

Bruce and Scott Scamehorn, Winter Haven, claimed the Regular Division title (72-67--139); Scott and Diana Davis, Pembroke Pines, won the age 10-11 Junior Division (32-31--63).
