Junior Teams Take Titles

More than 50 junior teams representing their junior programs competed over the weekend in the 2007 Florida State Junior Team Championship at Walt Disney World Golf Resort in Orlando.

On the Palm Course, The First Tee of Miami came back from five strokes down to win the boys 13-15 age division by six. Marcelo Huarte and Stefano Diaz each fired a 69 to contribute to the team’s second round total of 138. Along with teammate Jaime Rodriquez, The First Tee of Miami finished with a strong tournament total of 289 for the division title. Playing the Magnolia Course, the Greater Orlando Junior Golf Tour maintained their first round lead to capture the girls 13-15 age division by four strokes. Team members Samantha Marks, Cindy Feng and Simin Feng played a part in the team’s success with totals of 146-149 for each round.

Back on the Magnolia Course, the Palm Beach County Junior Golf Association jumped into first place posting a final round 6-under par 138 for the boys 16-18 age division title. Combined with their first round 146, the team finished with a 284 total to edge out the field by one. Team members Danny McIellan and Matthew Cahill each fired a second round 69, the low round of the division as teammate Brandon Heinkel aced the 12th hole. The First Tee of Miami finished one stroke shy of the Palm Beach County Junior Golf Association with a tournament total of 285. Symbiotic Golf at Deer Creek ran away with the girls 16-18 age division title winning by 13 strokes on Disney’s Palm Course. The team of Jennifer Gartin, Jaye Marie Green and Melissa Edmonson recorded a 150-145—295.

ELIGIBILITY

Open to junior programs that provide organized tournaments, instruction, or clinics that are open to all junior golfers in your community. National or statewide tours are not allowed to participate. Junior programs may select the individuals they send to the Team Championship by any criteria they select.

ENTRY FEE

$150 per team.

CHAMPIONSHIP FORMAT

36 holes stroke play. Total of the low 2 of the 3 gross scores each round.

DIVISIONS

  • Boys Ages 16-18, Boys Ages 13-15
  • Girls Ages 16-18, Girls Ages 13-15

COURSES

Palm and Magnolia.

CARTS

All players must walk and carry their own clubs. (Pull carts permitted.) Use of a caddie is not authorized. Coaches will be authorized to rent carts, but must follow the published policy (available on site).

DEFENDING CHAMPIONS

In the Boys 16-18 Division, Tallahassee Junior Golf won the division while Palm Beach County Junior Golf Association claimed the girls 16-18 age division. The King & The Bear Junior Program won the boys 13-15 age division while the Greater Sarasota Junior Golf Association took the girls 13-15 age division title.

DEADLINE

Each program can send as many teams as it prefers. Prior to June 27, only two teams per program will be entered into the field (in order of receipt). If the field is not full as of June 27, additional teams will be added on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Junior Programs may, through their Junior Program Coordinator, reserve a spot (with a fully-paid entry) without team member's names prior to the closing date, but must have players verified upon close of entries.
