July 12, 1982
Donnie Hammond emerged from the pack with a 5-under-par
67 and eased past third round leader Kip
Byrne to win the $50,000 Florida Open
golf tournament by one one stroke Sunday
at Sandpiper Bay Country Club.
The 19 year old mini tour player from Lonwood
finished with a 72-hole total of
12-under-par 276 over the par 72,
6,557-yard Sandpiper course. Byrne, who
started the day with a 2-shot lead,
carded a 7222 to finish at 277.
Hammond, playing in his first Florida Open,
earned $6,000. Byrne, of Winter Springs,
won $4,800.
Tom Garner of Pompano Beach was third with a 281 total,
followed by John Elliott, the second
round leader from Delray Beach, at 283.
Walt Zemriski, of Orlando; Roger Kennedy
of Pompano Beach; and Marc Arnette and
David Ross, both of Jacksonville, were
all bunched at 284.
Hammond took the lead for the first time when he
birdied the 11th and 12th holes on putts
of 4 and 60 feet. He bogeyed the 13th to
drop into a tie with Byrne, but
recaptured the lead with a birdie on No.
14.
