Summary
of 2009 Junior Conference
The Florida State Golf Association conducted the Florida Junior Golf Conference on March 21, 2009 at ChampionsGate Golf Resort. Over 30 junior coordinators were in attendance representing more than 15 junior programs in the state.

Jim Demick and Charlie DeLucca gave an update on the  Florida License Plate Junior Golf Grants and encouraged everyone to submit grant applications, but be reasonable with amounts requested.

Breakout sessions were held in the morning covering the following topics: tournament administration, marketing and fundraising, parents, and instruction and teaching. Many ideas were shared on each of the topics. The FSGA comprised a list of some of the successful fundraising techniques, click here to view them.

The FSGA announced a new program granting Florida Junior Tour exemptions to junior programs operating in Florida. Approved programs will receive FJT exemptions to distribute to their members at their discretion. This program is similar to the American Junior Golf Association's Performance Based Entry system and is intended to give talented local players easier access to state-level competitions.

After lunch Tom Keedy, from Allstate, answered questions regarding insurance and Hal Yost, from the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), provided information on purchasing affordable insurance through the AAU.

High school golf was discussed, the conversation focused on the threat of many counties eliminating golf as a high school sport. Long-term and short-term ramifications were discussed as well as ideas on encouraging school boards to not eliminate golf.

Another breakout session was held covering the following topics: girls golf, high school golf, volunteers, and IT & websites. Junior coordinators shared successful ideas on all topics.

The FSGA offered a traveling Rules of Golf Workshop strictly for junior golfers and their parents. The idea was met with excitement and positive comments among the junior programs in attendance. The idea is to have certified Rules instructors travel to various sections of the state and teach a 1-2 hour, highly interactive Rules Workshop for junior golfers. The workshop will stress the importance of etiquette, pace of play, and cover the most common rules that golfers encounter. Programs
