When Can I Use a Distance-Measuring Device?

New for 2006: Distance-Measuring Devices or “lasers” are permitted……ONLY if the Local Rule is in effect!

What is the Local Rule?

  • The Local Rule allows golfers to use a distance-measuring device to obtain distance information. (See recommended wording for applying the Local Rule)

When is the Local Rule in effect?

  • Only when the tournament committee or golf club in charge adopts the specific Local Rule permitting such devices.

What types of Distance Measuring Devices are allowed?

  • You CAN use a “laser,” a GPS System, or any distance-measuring device (provided the Local Rule is in effect) that measures DISTANCE ONLY.

What types of Distance Measuring Devices are NOT allowed?

  • A distance measuring device is not legal if it is capable of gauging or measuring other conditions (wind speed, gradient, temperature, etc.) that might affect play, even if those functions are NOT USED are PROHIBITED!

What is the Penalty if I use a “laser” that is not allowed?

  • DISQUALIFICATION

Can I borrow another player’s laser or distance measuring device?

  • Yes, when the Local Rule is in effect.
  • A player can “laser” someone else’s ball and provide the distance.

Recommended Wording for Local Rule allowing Measuring Devices:

Distance – Measuring Devices:
[Specify as appropriate, e.g., In this competition, or For all play at this course, etc], a player may obtain distance information by using a device that measures distance only. However, if, during a stipulated round, a player uses a distance-measuring device that is designed to gauge or measure other conditions that might affect his play (e.g., gradient, wind speed, temperature, etc.), the player is in breach of Rule 14-3, for which the penalty is disqualification, regardless of whether any such additional functions are actually used.
