Although
it is still some 10 months away, next years 2007 PGA
TOUR season has been the hot topic of conversation on
Tour so far this year.
The 2007 season will
feature the inaugural FED-EX Cup and will look
vastly different from the seasons of past. The FED-EX
Cup will feature 35 PGA TOUR events played from January
to mid-August, followed by three play-off style events
leading up to the Tour Championship in early September,
some 8 weeks earlier than its current date. During the
season the traditional money list will take a back seat
to the FED-EX Cup points race, somewhat similar to Nascar’s points race. Players will earn points during
the season to earn the right to play in the three
“playoff” style tournaments in late August, following
the PGA Championship. Those in the top 30 in points
after the play-offs will qualify for the Tour
Championship to decide the FED-EX Cup champion.
This is an attempt by
the PGA Tour to spice up its season, to get away from
competing with the NFL in the Fall, while providing a
shorter, more compact and meaningful season which
appeals to the marquee players. The Tour will still
maintain a lesser Fall Series of events for players
needing to secure eligibility for the following year.
You will hear a lot
about this exciting new look to the PGA TOUR season. The
Tour will be sure to educate golf fans on its new “look”
as this year progresses. |
