While
the recent victory by Stephen Ames at The Players
Championship will be remembered for the unbelievable
final round by the champion, it will go down in history
as memorable for another reason.
Ames’ resounding win will be the last at the “old” TPC
at Sawgrass. As the contestants pulled out of the
parking lot after The Players, the bulldozers and
demolition crews pulled in.
The scope of the work at Sawgrass encompasses not only
the clubhouse but also the famed golf course, spectator
areas and world class practice facility. All work will
be completed in only 14 months time for the new Players
Championship date in May 2007.
The old clubhouse at the TPC will be replaced by a new
“Mediterranean style” state of the art clubhouse,
including world class entertainment areas and a player
locker room second to none on the Tour.
While the golf course at TPC at Sawgrass has brought the
worlds best to their knees, the course will undergo a
massive renovation. All fairways will have years of
organic material build up stripped off the top, and will
be sand capped producing firmer faster playing surfaces.
All the greens will be rebuilt with a “subair” cooling
and drying system under the putting surfaces, and some
new greens will offer more set up options. Of course no
renovation would be complete without a new teeing ground
or two, but also continued narrowing of the fairways
will place a premium on accuracy.
Despite all the changes at The Players, one things for
sure, the famous island green 17th hole will not change,
and the tournament will continue to produce plenty of
drama for years to come. |
