Tip of the Month - Avoiding Hooks
By Gregor Jamieson, Director of Golf, Lake Nona Golf & Country Club

In addition to a closed clubface, many hooks result from swinging down along an excessively inside path. This drill forces you to swing from a slightly outside to in path; an all but sure way to start the ball left of your target if you are experiencing massive hooks. If your clubface is aiming square at impact, the ball has to fade. It will help players who swing the club too much from inside to out.

Find an old shaft and stick it in the ground about ten feet in front of you down the target line. Swing so that your ball passes to the left of the shaft after impact. To do this, you must rotate your left hip earlier in the downswing so that at impact, your hips are aligned left of the target. The clubhead must finish to the left on the follow-through. A key to doing this drill successfully is adjusting your sightline when looking down the line of play. You must look far to the left of your target line, feeling that you are swinging well left of the target.
