Summer Color
By Janice Ferguson, story courtesy of The Apparel Wire
Summer has arrived and with it comes splashing in the pool, clam bakes on the beach, sunset sails and early morning tee times. Be sure you're dressed to beat the heat in the season's most popular colors -- think delicious shades of fruit -- and you'll have made the ripe choice.

Tangerine, also being called papaya, is as vibrant as pink for summer. The color energizes neutrals -- white and khaki -- and is wearable with most skin tones. Use as a pop color in a top worn with plaid shorts, or as an accent in a placard, bold stripe and floral print.

Take orange beyond apparel and use in accessories too -- après golf sandals, totes, belts and hats.

Kiwi is back as the tone of green -- a bit calmer than lime. It's a can't-go-wrong contrast paired with all your cool whites, or mixed in stripes and patterns. This green almost acts as an alternative to neutrals when worn on the bottom, making it simple to match with a plain top -- a perfect ensemble for that brightly colored ribbon belt too.

Strawberry red is a classic color for the warm season. But don't overdue it or you'll look like an ongoing July 4th parade. It's best used as an accent, in multi-colored prints and mini or sear sucker style stripes. The hotter the color, the less you should use of it as a solid.

Blueberry wants to take the place of your basic black for summer. Not navy, not royal, and not sky -- it's right between. You'll find the color punching up geometric patterns in tops, added to greens and pinks in plaid bottoms, and standing on its own with crisp white in a stripe and Provencal prints.

Lemon is not sour when used in the sunny, citrus hue seen mixed with pinks, blues and greens. Too much and the course's resident bees might think you're the new hive. But used sparingly, it adds tang to any golf outfit -- even those standard khaki shorts.

Watermelon is darker than pink, but lighter than red and not quite as bold as fuchsia. Fresh and very fun when accented with the lemon, kiwi, tangerine, blueberry or a combination of those found in trendy plaids. Take advantage of the fact this color looks fabulous on blondes, brunettes, grays and redheads.

Colors are supposed to evoke certain moods. This summer's palate is intended to create a feeling of happy vitality. Feeling good is the motto. And if feeling good helps you play good, then we say bring out the fruit basket.
