North and South Share Junior Florida Cup

The inaugural Junior Florida Cup ended in a tie as the North and South teams each earned 20 points at Lake Nona Golf & Country Club in Orlando on June 14-15.

After the first day of the Junior Florida Cup, the North team led the South team by one point. The North team gained 6 ½ points in the morning round of four-ball compared to the South’s 3 ½ points. Five of the four-ball matches came down to the final hole resulting in three finishing all square. Due to a weather delay, the afternoon round of mixed foursomes was cut to nine holes. The South team came back strong earning six points to the North’s four points.

On the final day of singles matches, the South team came from one point down to share the Junior Florida Cup with the North team. The South team gained 10 ½ points winning ten singles matches while the North team won nine matches en route to earning 9 ½ points.

Since this is the first year of the Championship, the teams will share the title. In future years, the reigning Champion will retain the Cup if the event ends in a tie. The Junior Florida Cup matches pit 20 players from the North against 20 players from the South in a Ryder Cup format. Each team consists of 12 boys and 8 girls selected mostly from the Florida Junior Tour (FJT) points list. The first morning, each boy and girl is paired with a partner to compete in a four-ball match. In the afternoon round, the boys and girls are paired together to play mixed-foursomes matches. The final day each player competes in a singles match against a player from the opposing team. Points are awarded to each match similarly to the Ryder Cup to determine the winning team.

Playing for the North team was Wesley Graham, Matt Cooney, Kyle Cobb, Tyler Hock, Blayne Barber, Matthew Krembel, Evan Jensen, Sandra Changkija, Jaime Brabb, Michael Hebert, James Byrd, Jordyn Hage, Kendall Wright, Jessica Negron, Jack Twomey, Andrea Messer, Whitney Wenglasz, Peter Kolosvary, Eric Black, and Kevin Phelan.

The South team included Connor Arendell, Zackary Walker, Ville Vaisanen, Chris Kennedy, Billy Bowling, Brooks Koepka, Alexandria Buelow, Kristin Hill, Ashley Mooney, Tyler Herndon, John-Christian Templeton, Connor Barry, Alexis Thompson, Maria Castellanos, Madison Pressel, Daniel Mazziotta, Carl Santos-Ocampo, Maria Ronderos, Christopher Carlin, and Diana Davis.
