Rules Tip - Where did
my ball go, it must be in the hazard……
|
Have you ever tried to
find your ball in the rough around a water hazard? We
all have, and if we don’t find it in a reasonable amount
of time, what happens? Well, it must be in the hazard,
so we take our drop and keep playing. WRONG.
This situation involves two Rules; R26-1 and R27-1. In
order to take relief from the water hazard, Rule 26-1
states, “In order to treat the ball as lost in the
hazard, there must be reasonable evidence that the ball
lodged in it. In the absence of such evidence, the ball
must be treated as a lost ball and Rule 27 applies.”
Since we were looking in the rough around the hazard,
we weren’t sure where the ball was and cannot assume it
to be in the hazard. In this situation we must
accept that the ball is lost and Rule 27-1 (Ball Lost of
Out of Bounds) informs us how to proceed.
“If a ball is lost or out of bounds, the player must
play a ball, under penalty of one stroke, as nearly as
possible at the spot from which the original ball was
last played.”
Golf like Life, don’t assume anything.
