Who Wears Short Shorts?
by Janice Ferguson, story courtesy of The Apparel Wire

Ladies, there is good news about shorts this season -- lengths are all over the map. This fact means they are very wearable for women of all shapes, sizes and tastes. Save your shortest shorts for the beach and dive into the hottest trend carried over from last year -- Bermudas.

The better news is that Bermudas cover regulation length and knees. They are a must-have in your golf wardrobe, and don't assume you have to be 5-foot-9 to wear them. If you're short, hem them to the middle or top of your knee, if needed.

A vertical stripe pattern will give the illusion of longer legs. Pair with an un-tucked top that hits at the hip, and it works miracles. Monochromatic is also an effective way to elongate your body. A solid bottom with a shade lighter top in your favorite palate does the trick nicely.

If you are of average height or tall, make sure you're wearing shorts/pants with a contoured waistline -- just below the belly button. Tuck in a structured top and add a belt to create a very sporty, streamlined look.

Neiman Marcus is advertising shorts as one of their top 10 looks for spring. The reason we are not waiting for summer is the variety of styles and, again, lengths. Hollywood fashion reports are touting shorts as evening wear, stating they are more comfortable than skirts. Shorts are being worn with frilly, sparkly, dressy tops and high heels.

Naturally, this is a look you would wear to a nightclub, not your golf club, but a trend is a trend, which means we can find oodles of shorts to wear on the course, whether they are Cargo, Bermuda, knee, board, dressy, casual, chic or raglan. And then choose between stripes, linen, denim, cuffed, un-cuffed, short, long, in-between, baggy and slender.

Venture out for a classic pair of crisp, white or khaki Bermudas (also called knee shorts), as your new staple. They look great with golf shoes as long as you wear very low socks or half socks, and continue to wear them off the course with everything from flip-flops to ballerina flats to cork platforms.

Bermudas also cross demographic lines, appealing to all age groups -- plaid ones at Abercrombie & Fitch, embroidered and madras at Lilly Pulitzer, basic cotton twill at Old Navy, and sleek polyester blends at Sax.

Whether you carry a surfboard or a Gucci tote, Bermudas are body flattering, comfortable -- especially for golfing -- and, once again, they're in style.

Most Bermuda shorts will have a sufficient number of pockets for tees, ball markers and even a golf ball if you're not using the compartments on your bag, golf cart/carrier or clip-on accessory clutch. Keep in mind that you don't want to bulk to your torso when you don't have to. So slap on the self-tanner and get your legs -- however much you want to show of them -- ready for shorts, shorts and more shorts.
