Melson fired a final round 67 on the Cypress Course
at Bonita Bay Club East in Naples to win his
second Florida State Mid-Senior Championship.
Paul Melson, of Plantation, captured the 2006
Championship with a three round tournament total of
8-under par 208. After the first round of play, Melson
led the field shooting a 5-under par 67 on the South
Course at The Club at Mediterra. With a second
round 74 on the Cypress Course at Bonita Bay East,
Melson rebounded in the final round to match his first
round score of 67 to clinch the Championship by six
strokes. Melson won the 2003 Mid-Senior Championship and
this year’s Four-Ball Championship with partner
Edward Kenny. Rick Woulfe, of Fort
Lauderdale, and Bret Voisin, of Orlando, shared
second place with a 214 tournament total. Voisin shot
rounds of 72-69-73 and Woulfe, the 2005 Senior
Player-of-the-Year, posted even par in the first round
and a pair 71’s in the final two rounds. Jackie
Miller, of Naples, finished in fourth place with 215
total.
To be eligible for the Mid-Senior Championship, players
must be 40 years of age or older. The Championship
consisted of 54 holes of stroke play cut to the low 70
plus ties after 36 holes. The first two rounds were
played on the Cypress Course at Bonita Bay East and the
South Course at Mediterra. The final round was played on
the Cypress Course at Bonita Bay East.
