Last week the PGA Tour
released the full schedule for the 2007 season.
Everyone by now has learned of the new FED-EX Cup, a
points based competition, which essentially shortens and
compacts the season into a 34 week period. The FED-EX
Cup will feature a series of play-off style events in
late August and early September, culminating in the Tour
Championship in the second week of September. This
essentially takes the bulk of the marquee PGA Tour
events out of the NFL television market and to the
center of sports on TV in these months.
However, don’t think the PGA Tour is entirely over in
September. For those players outside the Top 30 and not
in the Tour Championship, there is a seven event fall
series for players to improve their position on the
official money list. The main race in these events will
be the ever important Top 125 and exempt status for the
following season. The events are essentially the same as
the traditional fall events now, with stops in upstate
New York, Jackson, San Antonio, Las Vegas and Disney.
Two new stops have been added in the fall in Fresno and
San Jose, California. As for the Presidents Cup and
Ryder Cup going forward, they will still play in their
usual late September date.
Theses changes are sure to add a lot more drama and
interest to the PGA Tour season and following the FED EX
Cup will be new to everyone in the golf world. |
