What is a “Mental Game”?
by David Breslow, Performance Coach

Most golfers are familiar with the phrase, “The Mental Game” but most of my clients express a great deal of frustration when it comes to developing it because they say, “Most of the books tell us what to do but not how to do it.” Golfers at all levels have frustration when it comes to the “mental game” and vary in opinion on its importance.

What percentage of your overall game would you rate the significance of the “mental game” and how important is it? I polled golfers at all levels and:

• 95% say it’s highly important
• Less than 10% formally develop it
• 75% is the average rating given to its significance of their overall game

Interesting!

Over 90% know it’s important yet less than 10% formally develop it and on average, people rate a mental game as 75% significant.

What if I said, “the mental game influences you 100% of the time, without exception? You might think, “That’s not possible. What about mechanics and managing the course?”

As I teach it, the "Mental Game" unquestionably influences you 100% of the time because it consists of 4 components:

• The Mind
• The Body
• The Spirit
• The Emotions

Everyone has them and I call them the "4 Quads©. The truth is; you CANNOT SEPARATE THEM and when the 4 Quads© are in sync you will perform better. When they are not in sync you will under perform and every time you put your hands on the golf club; all 4 are involved! What is significant about the 4 Quads© is they function via a set of precise, predictable and undeniable laws and principles that operate the same for everyone. THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS!

What’s the Obstacle?

The 3 most common reasons people don’t develop a mental game are:

1. “It’s too confusing and it doesn’t work!”

Let’s face it; I’ve yet to meet a client who didn’t already know that being positive is better than being negative and that being confident is better than lacking confidence. Quick-fix tips or nice sounding theories don’t get it done; the key is understanding that your game is under the influence of Human Performance Laws and Principles that influence everyone, without exception.

2. “I don’t want to be psychoanalyzed”

Traditional approaches use the psychological model as their framework and the word “mental” is often linked with the word “therapy”. The FlowZone© approach is not about therapy at all. It moves you forward by teaching the performance laws and principles that influence you and everyone else no matter their age, gender, personality type or skill level so you can create more of what you want.

3. “It’s a sign of weakness”

There is nothing “weak” about it. The best players in the world understand that without building their “inner game”, their outer game won’t flourish. It’s a sign of personal strength and wisdom to learn how to express your talents and skills rather than struggle and under perform.

The question is; is your game a reflection of the time, effort and money you’ve invested? If not, the laws and principles will help you express your talents more fully and consistently. I’m happy to answer questions personally; call 847.681.1698
