Florida State Amateur Field Set

Jeff Dennis, 2006 Amateur              Champion

The top 168 amateur golfers in the state will compete next week, June 21-24, with hopes of winning the 90th Florida State Amateur Championship at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor.

Before reaching the Championship, more than 845 participants attempted to qualify at one of 13 sites across the state. In the Championship, participants will play 18 holes each on the Island and Copperhead Courses on June 21-22. After 36 holes, the field will be cut to the low 70 and ties. The final 36 holes of the Championship will be played on June 23-24 on the Copperhead Course, home to the PGA Tour’s PODS Championship.

Defending Champion Jeff Dennis, of Parkland, will join other former State Amateur Champions who are exempt from qualifying. Two-time Amateur Champion Mark Leetzow, of Sarasota, is in the field as well as 2003 Champion Richard Maddox, of Panama City, and 2005 Champion Ryan Abbate, from Fort Lauderdale. Jeff Golden, of Winter Park, and Chris Condello, of Heathrow, who advanced to the US Open Championship from sectional qualifying, will also be competing in the Amateur. In all, 29 players are exempt from qualifying through different categories.

Started in 1914, the FSGA State Amateur is the oldest continuous sporting event in the state as well as the largest amateur event in Florida. Past Amateur champions include Bob Murphy, Jerry Pate, Buddy Alexander, and PGA Tour players David Peoples, Chris Couch, and Barry Cheesman.

Spectators are welcome to watch the state’s best amateur golfers compete at Innisbrook.
