“It
hung on the lip and then fell in…..what’s the ruling?”
In the very special circumstances when any part of the ball
is overhanging the lip of the hole, Rule 16-2 kicks in. Even
though the ball may have stopped moving, it is not yet at
rest according to the Rules of Golf.
Here’s what happens:
First, the player is allowed enough time to reach the hole
without unreasonable delay. That may include your “falling
down I can’t believe I left it short routine”.
Next, the player is allowed 10 seconds more to see if the
ball falls into the hole. If the ball falls into the hole
anytime before or up to this point, it is holed with your
last stroke. Congratulations!
Finally, if the ball is still sitting there on the edge of
the hole after the 10 second count, it is deemed to be at
rest so you might as well tap it in and quit wasting anymore
time. If for some reason it falls in on its own after the
count, you are penalized one stroke under this Rule so it
made no difference whether you tapped it in or it fell in on
its own; you still have the same score. |
