Top Golfers Named to Florida Cup Teams
North Florida won the Florida Cup in 2005

The Florida State Golf Association (FSGA) has announced the teams representing North and South Florida in the 6th annual Florida Cup Matches. The Fox Club in Palm City will host the Matches on October 25-26, 2007.

The North Florida team includes Jon Veneziano, of Mount Dora, who recently represented Florida in the USGA State Team Championship. Veneziano won last year’s Public Links Championship and the 2005 Mid-Amateur Championship and will be competing in this year’s US Mid-Amateur Championship. Robert Parker, of Sanford, a two-time Public Links Champion, will be playing for the North team as will last year’s Mid-Amateur Champion Bret Voisin, of Orlando. Parker’s partner Doug Snoap, of Apopka, who together won the Mid-Amateur Four-Ball North Championship this year, will be playing for the North team. Voisin’s son, Bryce, is also on the North team after winning this year’s Four-Ball Championship. Andy Purnell, of Jacksonville, the 2003 Match Play Champion and 2005 Four-Ball Champion, will join Richard Maddox, of Panama City, the 2003 Amateur Champion, on the North team. Brent Dorman, of Ocala, Tim Hume, of Tampa, Patrick Olive, of Holiday, Paul Royak, of Tampa, and Tommy Dudley, of Jacksonville, will also play for the North. Also named to the North team is 2004 Senior Amateur Champion Bruce Scamehorn, of Winter Haven. Kim Schwencke, of Temple Terrace, the Winter Series points leader in the 55-64 age division, together with Felix Bertucci, of Gulfport, and Berger Warner, of Ocala, round out the North team.

The South Florida team features Edward Kenny, of Lake Worth, last year’s Four-Ball Champion along with Samuel Martinez, of Miami, who led the 40-54 age division Winter Series points list. RJ Nakashian, of Palm Beach Gardens, will also represent South Florida in addition to James Weick, of Ft. Lauderdale, and Danny Germaine, of Palm Beach Gardens. Michael Nealy, from Boca Raton, Artie Scott, of Tequesta, and Brent Bush, of Palm Beach Gardens, will be on the team as well as Jackie Miller, of Naples, a three-time Mid-Senior Four-Ball South Champion. Miller advanced to this year’s US Open Section Qualifying. Eoghan O’Connell, of Palm Beach Gardens, last year’s Senior/Mid-Amateur Four-Ball Champion, will be playing his home course in the Matches. Mark Leetzow, of Sarasota, a four-time State Champion, and Kevin Hammer, of Boynton Beach, will complete the team.

Held every two years, the Florida Cup Matches vie the top 16 amateurs from North Florida versus the top 16 amateurs from South Florida. Using a Ryder-Cup format, the winner is determined by the number of points earned throughout the two days. Using the Florida State Golf Association's point standings list, players are invited based on their point standings. In 2005, North Florida won the Matches 17-15 to take the series lead at 3-2.

On Thursday, October 25, competitors play 18 holes of four-ball stroke play in the morning and alternate shot in the afternoon. The final day, Friday, October 26, participants will compete in 18 holes of singles match play.
