Florida Announces USGA State Team

Jeff Golden and Chris Condello

Chris Condello, Jeff Golden and Jon Veneziano will represent Florida in the 7th USGA Men’s State Team Championship to be held at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas on September 18-20.

Chris Condello, of Heathrow, and Jeff Golden, from Winter Park, advanced from US Open Sectional Qualifying to compete in this year’s US Open Championship and also competed in last week’s US Amateur in San Francisco. Condello, the 2007 Ivy League Individual Champion from Columbia University, advanced to the Round of 16 in the Amateur Match Play Championship last month. Golden recently wrapped up his college career at Rollins College where he finished eighth in the NCAA Division II South Region Tournament. Golden also tied for eighth place in the State Amateur in June. Jon Veneziano, from Mount Dora, has two state titles including last year’s Public Links Championship. He also won the 2005 Mid-Amateur Championship and recently qualified for the US Mid-Amateur Championship. As FSGA points leader, Golden was an automatic selection and Condello and Veneziano were Committee selections.

The USGA State Team Championship began in 1995 to celebrate the USGA’s Centennial celebration. It was such a success that the USGA now conducts the event every two years. Fifty-two teams, from all 50 states and Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, are invited to send three non-college amateur players and can choose their teams by any method. Teams compete in three, 18-hole stroke play rounds, the two lowest scores by players from each team constitute the team score for each round. The 54-hole total is the team’s score for the Championship.
