Volunteer Spotlight - Coach Jim King

Where were you born and raised? Born and raised (except a two-year hitch in the US ARMY) in Saginaw, Michigan until I retired in 1995.

What college(s) did you attend? Delta College (Michigan) - Associate of Arts, Central Michigan University - Bachelor of Science , Central Michigan University - Master of Arts, University of Michigan - post graduate

When did you start playing golf? Started caddying at age 11 and started playing at age 12.

When did you move to Florida? We moved to Florida in 2005 after spending the first 10 years of retirement in the Charleston, SC area.

What line of work were you in? I spent thirty years of teaching, coaching (football and swimming) in public schools in the Saginaw, Michigan area while also officiating football, basketball, swimming and baseball.

How did you get involved with the FSGA? I have rheumatoid arthritis and when it became quite severe in 2005 I needed an athletic outlet because it know if or how long I was going to be able to play golf. Volunteering with the FSGA provided an outlet for me to still be involved in golf and volunteer at the same time. The RA is now under control with a monthly infusion of chemicals (chemo) and I am enjoying playing and combining my playing with volunteering.

My involvement with the FSGA centers around working all types of events; Junior Tour, Winter Series, USGA qualifiers, FSGA qualifiers and championships. I covered the waterfront of volunteering activities - registration, starter, set-up, on-course official and scoring plus I get enjoyment out of hassling Mr. Demick. So far, I have worked more than 60 events. I have attended all the rules clinics that have been held in The Villages plus a two-day session next month in Ocala.

Special Moments: The players - juniors and adults.
The FSGA Staff - outstanding
The other volunteering - caring individuals
The Clubs - some really good courses

What's the best thing about volunteering? The people!

Tell us about your family? Wife Bonnie who plays golf three times a week in addition to volunteering three mornings a week as a water aerobics instructor.

Son - Wade who is in the banking business in Columbia, SC and was a 14 time All-American at the University of South Carolina in swimming while winning a National Championship in 1989.

Daughter-In-Law - Tracy - who also spent four years swimming at the University of South Carolina - who is part-time CPA and full-time stay-at-home mother to Vincent age 15 and Michael age 12 who are both swimmers and good students.

Other Hobbies? I manage to play golf 3-4 times and enjoy volunteering as hobby. My mother and mother-in-law spent over 50 years volunteering as Red Cross gray ladies in the hospitals of Saginaw, Michigan. My wife and I are just continuing the tradition.

My golf career has been the outlet of all the frustrations I experienced teaching and coach. I have three aces but it took over 40 years to experience the first.
