Steve Melnyk Inducted into FSGA Hall of Fame

Last month, the FSGA inducted Steve Melnyk into the FSGA Hall of Fame at the 2008 Annual Dinner at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville. Steve Melnyk was honored as the fourth class of inductees into the Hall of Fame.

Steven Melnyk began his golf career at the University of Florida, where he was a three time All-American and helped his team win their first NCAA Division I Golf Championship in 1968. After graduation, he won the 1969 United States Amateur, Western Amateur and was a member of the 1969 Walker Cup Team. In 1970, he was the low amateur in the British Open and champion of the Eastern Amateur. In 1971, he was the low amateur in the Masters. That same year, Melnyk captured the British Amateur Championship and again was invited to be a member of the 1971 Walker Cup Team.

In 1972, he joined the PGA Tour. While on the PGA Tour, Melnyk had four second place finishes and won the 1972 Masters Par 3 Contest. In 1982, he sustained an elbow injury and last played on the PGA Tour in 1983. Melnyk joined CBS Sports as a Golf Analyst in 1982 and continued as an analyst with CBS until 1991. In 1992, he moved to ABC Sports, with ESPN, from 1992-2005. In 2005, he joined the Golf Channel hosting USGA Amateur Championships.

Melnyk is also very accomplished in the business side of golf. From 1978-80, he served as the Director of Golf for Amelia Island Plantation. He was involved with the Sea Island Company in 2005 as the Director of Sales and Real Estate. Melnyk is also on the Board of Directors of Contus Corporation, a virtual golf simulator company that markets products in the name of AboutGolf. He has been involved with the Library and Museum Committee of the USGA and is heavily involved with the University of Florida’s Athletic community serving as a President of the University of Florida Gator Booster Board from 2001-02 and on the Board of Directors for the University of Florida Athletic Association since 1999.

Steven Melnyk and his wife Debby reside in Jacksonville, Florida. They have two sons, Dalton and Butler.
