(L-R) Simin Feng and
Cindy Feng |
|
Simin and
Cindy have a lot in common. They share the Feng last name,
hail from China, now attend Windermere Preparatory School
and are outstanding junior golfers. Friends from their
native country, but not related, the girls are now trying to
pursue their dreams of playing competitive golf.
Simin, 13 years old, and Cindy, 12, have been battling it
out all season long for the top spot on the Florida Junior
Tour (FJT) points standings. Currently, Simin leads by 683
points with the Junior Girls' Championship remaining for
points counted. Simin has won three FJT titles this season
and placed in the top five in five additional events. Simin has even played up in the
16-18 age division and has placed in the top five in four
events. Cindy also has three FJT wins including four top
five finishes this season.
Simin started playing golf just four years ago when she was
nine years old. Her dad introduced her to the game and she
would go out and play with him with just one club. In just a
short time, Simin’s golf game has grown to practicing almost
every day and playing tournaments at a state and national
level. She works with Fred Griffin who she credits for
“helping me lot.” Small in stature, Simin has the power to
hit the ball long. Simin says, “Most of the time, I can hit
my drives straight and long without missing the fairways and
I can hit my irons pretty close.” She is constantly working
on improving her putting and her wedge shots but “spends
time equally on everything.” In addition to FJT events,
Simin is making a name on the AJGA circuit. She won an AJGA
Junior All Star tournament last summer and has goals of
winning an AJGA Open and finishing in the Top 10 in AJGA
Invitationals to play in the POLO Championship. Simin wants
to make golf a career and turn professional but for now,
she’s like any other 13-year-old who likes to shop and hang
out with her friends.
Cindy was introduced to the game at the early age of 4 ½
when like Simin, her father took her to the golf course.
From that moment, her love for the game just continued to
grow and she started practicing and playing competitive
golf. Cindy practices about six days a week and takes
lessons from David Leadbetter. She claims, “My short game is
better because I don’t hit it very far.” Hitting the ball
farther is the one part of her game that she is continuously
working on. Cindy lists winning the Callaway Junior World
Championship in 2004 and the US Kids Championship in 2004
and 2007 as her biggest accomplishments. Cindy says for the
future, “I just hope to do the best I can.” Besides golf,
Cindy enjoys fishing and drawing. During the winter months,
Cindy says, “I love to read because I don’t get to fish that
much.”
