Is that warm-up club a
non-conforming club?
By Jack Pultorak, FSGA

At a recent college event, I received the dreaded call on the
radio that a player had inadvertently started his round with a
Momentus® Swing Trainer iron in his bag.
The Momentus® Swing Trainer iron is designed as a training aid
and not as a club to be used while playing the game. It does not
comply with the specifications for clubs in Appendix II of the
Rules of Golf in two ways rendering it non-conforming: the
reminder grip and the groove requirements.
Under Rule 4-1a, “The players clubs must conform with
this Rule and the provisions, specifications and interpretations
set forth in Appendix II.”
The penalty for carrying, but not making a stroke with a club or
clubs in breach of Rule 4-1 or 4-2 is two strokes at each hole
at which any breach occurred; maximum penalty per round – Four
strokes. Any club or clubs carried in breach of this Rule must
be declared out of play to his marker or fellow competitor in
stroke play immediately upon discovery that a breach has
occurred. The penalty for making a stroke with a club in breach
of Rule 4-1 or 4-2 is Disqualification.
Thankfully, the player noticed it on the first hole and
immediately declared it out of play incurring only a two stroke
penalty.
Hopefully, the next time you begin a round, you’ll take a moment
to count your clubs and notice anything else in the bag!
Remember, it pays to know the Rules. Knowing the Rules of Golf
can help you save strokes and enjoy the game of golf.
