Volunteer Spotlight - Charles Caravati
Where were you born and raised?  I was born in Torrington, Connecticut in 1938. I lived there until after college & moved to Chicago in 1960.

What college(s) did you attend?
I attended the University of Notre Dame. I graduated in 1959 with a Major in Accounting.

Did you play golf as a child?
I played very little golf as a child, but I started caddying when I was 10 years old at the Torrington Country Club.

When did you move to Florida?  I moved to Florida in 1968.

What line of work were you in/what different careers did you have?  I was in the army for several years: Six months of active duty in U.S. Army in 1959; nine months of active duty with the U.S. Army in 1961 & 1962 with the 32d Infantry Division at Fort Lewis, Washington.  Then from 1959 to 1968, I was employed by Arthur Young & Company in its Chicago Office, starting as a staff accountant and rising to an Audit Manager in 1965. I passed the Illinois CPA Exam in 1961. ( That was when 2 +2 equaled 4.)  In 1968, I accepted a position with the Root Company as its Chief Financial Officer in Daytona Beach. Retired from Root Company in 1994.  Root Company was the majority shareholder of Associated Coca-Cola Bottling Company.  Chapman S. Root, the founder, obtained the original patent on the Coca-Cola Bottle in 1917.

How did you get involved with the FSGA?
I became involved with the FSGA through Mr. Bill Buchannan who was a Board Member of FSGA and Captain of the Local Rating Team.

What is your involvement with the FSGA?  I am currently an area Co-Captain of the FSGA Rating Team (Section 4). I also serve as a Committee Member for FSGA sponsored tournaments in the areas of Course Set Up, Rules & Starting.

What's the best thing about volunteering?  The best thing about volunteering is being involved in the administrative portion of golf tournaments & being part of the process of Course Rating & Handicapping. I especially enjoy working with the other volunteers who had no idea golf could be so difficult!!

Do you have any special memories of volunteering?
My most memorable moments were being part of three FSGA Rating Teams participating in the USGA Course Rating Calibration Seminars on three separate occasions. We finished first, first & second in the three seminars.

Have you attended any seminars?
I have attended numerous course rating & rules seminars conducted by the FSGA & USGA.

Tell us about your family:
I have been married for 48 years to Eileen; we have 4 children Kevin – a Geologist with Georgia Tech Research Institute; Ellen- an instructor at Keiser University; Thomas – a Manager at Yak & Yeti, a restaurant at Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World; & Colleen, Manager, Int’l Real Estate, Corning Corporate Real Estate, Corning, Inc. Two grandchildren, Lillie & Leah.

Do you currently play golf/any holes-in-one?  I currently play golf 3 times a week; I am a member of Indigo Lakes Golf Club in Daytona Beach with an Index of 12.1.  I have been fortunate to have made 5 holes–in-one. Because of my work with FSGA, I am considered the local rules guru & course set-up expert. "I don’t make the rules, just read em.” is my motto.

Anything else you wish to share with usI have been impressed and influenced by the staff, tournament officials and rules officials of FSGA  because of their interest and dedication to the game of golf and making it so enjoyable in Florida.
Also, I have a Yellow Labrador Retriever ( Buttercup) that loves to sniff out lost golf balls!
