Captain's Meeting Recap

By Gary Donat

On April 21st and 22nd, the FSGA and FWSGA held a Captain’s Meeting at Hunter’s Green Country Club. The purpose of the meeting was to go over the recent USGA Course Rating Calibration Seminar and discuss policies and procedures to use when submitting rating and measuring information to the office. The Captain’s in attendance all agreed to the policies and procedures.  Below is a summary of the seminar and the policies that will now be implemented:

1. Men’s and Women’s Rating Released at the Same Time – Most clubs request a Men’s and Women’s rating at the same time, therefore the final ratings should be released to the club together. This is to ensure that any problems found by the last team to rate the course is incorporated into the first teams rating.

2. Measurement Forms – In the office there can be some confusion trying to decipher the myriad of forms, so as a group we have decided to use one form for measurements. This form will be incorporated into Brian’s measurement workbook and as a .pdf file set to be released within the week.

3. Course Rating Management Webpage – Use of this tool is a must. Emails may not reach the designated address therefore it is imperative that every Captain utilize the FSGA or FWSGA Course Rating Management webpage to ensure that a rating has not fallen through the cracks. Every request that comes in is entered into the database and an email sent out to the Captains. If you don’t have an email for the particular rating listed in your section, please give me a call so we can straighten out the problem.

4. Evaluations – As group we discussed the use of evaluations of random ratings in the office. These evaluations are to be a simple assessment of the team’s performance for a particular rating. I will look at the form 1, yardages and tee designations and report on any necessary corrections. The club will be notified and asked about the club’s experience with the raters.

I want to thank Brian Robideau for his review of his electronic workbook and Sharon Baerenklau for her demonstration of the use of Google Earth for ratings and measurements. And, of course, thanks for all in attendance!
