Volunteer Spotlight - Tim Palmer

Where were you born and raised? I was born in Portland, Oregon and raised in Chewelah Washington, a small Eastern Washington town north of Spokane

What college(s) did you attend?
.  I attended Columbia Basin College and Washington State University, from which I graduated with a degree in Economics.

Did you play golf as a child?
I did not play golf as a child because there were no golf courses anywhere near my hometown and I didn’t know anyone who played the game.

What line of work were you in/what different careers did you have?
I first came to Jacksonville, Florida in 1967 as a newly designated Naval Aviator, for training as a Light Attack Pilot.  During the course of my 30 year Navy Career, I spent approximately 11 of those years stationed at bases in the Jacksonville area.  I did not take up golf until I was 46 years old, but did become a fanatic about the game.

When did you move to Florida?
Following my retirement from the Navy in 1995, my wife and I choose St. Augustine because of the beauty of the city, the great people that reside here and the appeal of living in a golf course community.  After building our home here in St. Augustine I entered the real estate sales profession and did that for six years before retiring completely.

How did you get involved with the FSGA?
I became involved with FSGA through Ed Boyer, who was the Rating Team Captain here in our area and also was a resident of my community.  As a result, when Ed retired from Ratings, I volunteered to assist in coordinating events and, therefore, was made the co-captain of our team.

What is your involvement with the FSGA?
At present, my involvement with FSGA is limited to course ratings for our section.  I am a co-captain for Section 3.

What's the best thing about volunteering? The benefit I receive from volunteering is the opportunity to meet other golfers in our area and to learn more about how course layouts affect the game.

Do you have any special memories of volunteering?
Because I am relatively new to volunteering, I haven’t built up much in the way of special events or memories other than the satisfaction of doing a good job of rating each course.

Have you attended any seminars (Rules of Golf or Course Rating)?
I have attended several seminars on Course Ratings and look forward to many more as this is always a learning experience.

Tell us about your family:
I am married to Laura and we have four grown children, three of whom live in Southern California and the other resides in Massachusetts.  I addition, we have eight grand children, one of whom seems to possess a lot of golf talent.

Do you currently play golf/any holes-in-one?
My wife and I are members of Marsh Creek Country Club here in St. Augustine, where I play three or four times a week.  I have had only one hole-in-one and that was here the par 3, number 4 hole at Marsh Creek.
