Charlie Bedford Award
The volunteer-of-the-year award is named after Charlie Bedford who was an outstanding FSGA Committee Member and volunteered his time as both a Tournament Chairman and Course Rater. Charlie was an expert on the Rules of Golf and a USGA Master Course Rater. He spent countless days of service to the game he loved and cherished.
Charlie was recognized as the 2000 Volunteer-of-the-Year, received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 and was inducted into the Florida Golf Hall of Fame in 2005. He was a USGA Committee Member for ten years and officiated four US Opens, six US Amateurs, seven US Senior Opens and ten US Amateur Public Links Championships.
2012 Recipients
Sharon Baerenklau and David Jungk have been awarded the 2012 Charlie Bedford Award for their hard work and dedication to amateur golf in the state. These hard-working volunteers were recognized at the FSGA Annual Dinner in November.
Sharon Baerenklau, of Heathrow was awarded the Course Rating Volunteer of the Year. For the past 10 years Sharon has been captain of the Orange, Seminole, and Volusia County women’s rating teams. She was recruited as a captain after only two ratings. Sharon also attended the Eastern Course Rating Calibration several times, most recently in 2010 where she lead the team from Florida to a first place finish.
David Jungk, of Ocala was award the Tournament Volunteer of the Year. David has been involved with the FSGA since 2010. Prior to retiring to Florida and joining the FSGA, David worked 38 years with Prudential Insurance Company as an Actuary. Since his time with the FSGA, David has volunteered at over 80 events ranging from the Florida Junior Tour, the Winter Series, USGA and FSGA qualifiers, FSGA Championships, and College and High School events.
