11th Florida Cup - South Team Preview

The South Team heads into the 11th Florida Cup Matches looking to take a 6-5 lead in the series coming off of back-to-back victories in 2012 & 2014. The team returns 5 of the 16 members from the victorious 2014 team:  Stephen Anderson, R J Nakashian, Peter Wegmann, Jim Weick and Rick Woulfe.  Highlighting the 11 team members joining them, and one of nine Florida Cup rookies will be Chris Carlin. Carlin captured two FSGA Championships this summer. First he partnered with Nicolas Cavero to capture the 67th FSGA Four-Ball at Orchid Island Club, in July. Then in August, he went wire to wire at the 25th FSGA Amateur Match Play Championship, earning co-medalist honors in stroke play, and then running through the bracket of 64 to hoist his second trophy.

Ben’s career highlights include a t2 finish at the 2015 Two-Man Shoot-Out and qualifying for the 2012 US Mid-Amateur Championship.




Stephen Anderson, Hobe Sound (4th Appearance 2-7-0)

Stephen’s 2015-2016 campaign saw him capture four FSGA Championships:  2015 & 2016 Mid-Amateur Four-Ball South Championships, 2015 Mid-Senior Championship, and 2016 Mid-Senior Four-Ball South Championship.  Over the summer of 2016 he posted a T11 finish at the FSGA Amateur Championship and finished runner-up at the Mid-Senior Championship. Anderson is a two-time FSGA Player of the Year in 2010 & 2011, and also captured the Mid-Amateur both seasons. Anderson boasts 12 FSGA Championships, and currently has 8 consecutive seasons with a victory. Stephen holds the course record at Bay Hill Club & Lodge with 62 (-10), was the captain of the Ohio State Golf Team from 1991-1993, a 1992 NCAA All-American Honorable Mention and captured the 1990 Ohio State Amateur.


Chris Carlin, Plantation (1st Appearance)

Carlin will be a Florida Cup rookie, but will not be new to the experience as he competed as a Junior in the first two Junior Florida Cups. In 2016 Carlin captured both the FSGA Four-Ball & Amateur Match Play Championships. His top golf accomplishments include 3 collegiate individual victories, being named a First Team All-American and winning the 2016 Palm Beach Amateur in addition to his two FSGA Championships this summer.

Donegan, a 2016 University of Florida graduate, captured the 2015 FSGA Amateur Public Links in runaway fashion at Celebration Golf Club. He opened with a course record 62. At Florida, Richard had two individual wins and in High School captured the 2011 FHSAA High School State Championship

Ben captured the 2015 FSGA Mid-Senior Four-Ball South with partner and South Team teammate Rick Woulfe. Ben also qualified for the 2015 Mid-Amateur Championship and 2016 Amateur Championship.

Marc finished runner-up in the 2015 Two-Man Shoot-Out, 2016 Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championship and 2016 Mid-Amateur Four-Ball South.  At Florida Southern, Marc was a two-time Division II All-American, two-time Sunshine State Conference First Team selection and two-time All Regional Selection.



Brigham Gibbs, Miami (1st Appearance)

Brigham earned low amateur honors finishing runner-up in the 2015 Florida Senior Open Championship, and posted top 25 finishes in the 2016 Mid-Amateur Stroke Play and Florida Senior Open Championships. Brigham also boasts a runner up finish at the Idaho Open in his golf career.

Owen Joyner, Bonita Springs (1st Appearance)

Owen posted finishes of T3 & T9 at the 2015 & 2016 Senior Championships, won the 2015 Senior Four-Ball Championship, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2016 Senior Amateur Match Play Championship.






Matthew Marino, Miami Beach (1st Appearance)

Matthew has made the cut at the last two Mid-Amateur Stroke Play Championships, finishing t10 in 2015. He also advanced to match play at the last two Mid-Amateur Championships. In college, Matthew played every event in all four years at Ashland University and captured the 2003 Cleveland Amateur Championship.



R J Nakashian, Palm Beach Gardens (4th Appearance 5-3-1)

R J captured three FSGA Championships in the two year points cycle. Teaming with South Team Captain Stephen Anderson, the duo captured the 2015 and 2016 Mid-Amateur Four-Ball South Championships and the 2016 Mid-Senior Four-Ball South Championship. In 2015, the pair also qualified for the inaugural US Four-Ball Championship advancing to the Round of 32 before falling to eventual champions Nathan Smith & Todd White. Nakashian made the cut at the 2016 Florida Amateur finishing t30 and in August captured his second Mid-Senior Championship after finishing 2nd in a play-off in 2015.

This will be Jose’s second Florida Cup appearance. Jose advanced to the round of 32 at the 2015 Mid-Amateur Championship at Sara Bay and is a perennial contender at the Winter Series Events.

Jerry’s resume includes winning 3 Resorter’s Championship, the Golfweek Senior National Championship, 2 runner-up finishes in the FSGA Senior Match Play. 2016 saw Jerry finish t29 at the Florida Senior Amateur, runner-up at the Senior Amateur Match Play to South Team teammate Peter Wegmann and qualify for the US Senior Amateur Championship.



Peter Wegmann, Fort Lauderdale (3rd Appearance 2-1-3)

Peter completed the Senior double this year, capturing both the Senior Amateur and Senior Amateur Match Play Championships and leads the FSGA Senior Player of the Year Points List. Wegmann also captured the 2007 FSGA Mid-Senior Championship.




Jim Weick, Fort Lauderdale (6th Appearance 4-10-1)

Jim won the Southwest Amateur Series at Hammock Bay & The Rookery, and posted a t12 finish at the 2016 Two-Man Shoot-Out.  Jim is the 2009-2010 FSGA Winter Series Points Champion in the 40-54 Age Division.



Rick Woulfe, Fort Lauderdale (10th Appearance 10-7-5)

Rick is the nine-time FSGA Senior Player of the Year. 2016 saw Rick post a T5 finish at the Senior Amateur, Qualify for Match Play at the Senior Match Play, make the cut at the Amateur Championship and Florida Senior Open, qualify for the US Senior Amateur and finish 4th in the Senior Four-Ball Championship with partner and South Team teammate Peter Wegmann. Rick’s top golf accomplishments include winning the Florida Mid-Amateur in 2012 at the age of 62 and beating Tiger Woods in Match Play at the 1992 Dixie Amateur.
