Joe Alfieri II Wins Match Play

Joe Alfieri II, Lutz, defeated Doug Snoap, Apopka, for the Florida State Match Play Championship title today at The Forest Country Club in Ft, Myers.

Alfieri started the final match by winning the first two holes and was 3 up after the first 10 holes, Snoap then made his move by winning holes 11, 13, 14 and 15 and turned the match around to 1 up in his favor. Alfieri, however, comes back to claim the 16th and 17th holes and is 1 up. The pair halved the 18th hole, making Alfieri the champion.

Since last Sunday, Alfieri has played 163 holes, which includes the US Amateur Qualifier he played on Monday and Tuesday, August 6-7, at The Forest Country Club. This is Alfieri's second FSGA title. He also won the 1999 Mid-Amateur at Timuquana Country Club in Jacksonville.

In addition to the Championship flight, there were four additional flights from which four separate flight; winners were named, Chris Calvert, Plantation, won the first flight after 19 holes, while Bob Ethridge, also of Plantation, won the second flight 7 and 6. Both players are members of Lago Mar Country Club in Plantation. The third flight winner is Marc St. Martin of Estero and Lee Booker of Naples won the fourth flight.

Alfieri received a crystal vase and will have his name inscribed on the permanent championship trophy.
