Hewlett Takes the First-Round Lead

What Happened

Following a short weather delay to start the day, it was Madison Hewlett who held the first-round lead at the 91st Women’s Amateur Championship. In total, 90 players teed it up on Friday at at Mission Inn Resort & Club.

Hewlett took the lead at the Women’s Amateur with a bogey-free 67 in the first round.

Starting the day on 10th hole, she played steady golf through the first six holes. The Oldsmar native birdied two the final three holes on her front nine to make the turn at 2-under. Hewlett added three more birdies on her second nine, including back-to-back birdies to finish up the day. She holds a four-shot lead heading into the second round.

Three players sit in a tie for second at 1-under 71, while two players are tied for fifth at even-par 72.

Notable

Kendall Griffin, the 2019 Women’s Amateur Stroke Play champion, posted a first-round 74 to finish the day in a tie for 15th.

Tee times were delayed by an hour and 46 minutes due to weather.

Only four players posted under-par rounds on Tuesday at Mission Inn.

Kaitlyn Schroeder, who won the Girls’ Junior Championship earlier this month, opened the championship with a 2-over 74 to sit in a tie for 15th.
