Birdies Galore at Brooksville

January 27, 2013

Eighty-four juniors traveled to Brooksville Country Club this weekend to compete in the first 16-18 age division Florida Junior Tour event of 2013. Warm weather and light winds created a perfect atmosphere for low scores.

In the boys division, round one was full of low scores and nearly half of the field was within several shots of the leaders. Heavy fog delayed the start of the final round for two hours, but the players didn't seem to mind.

Jordan Miller, of Bradenton, shot 71 in the first round and trailed the leader, Paul Doig, by just one stroke. Miller took advantage of the perfect conditions and pulled away from the field with a bogey-free, seven under par 65. He made birdies on hole 5, 7, 12, 13, and 17. He also eagled the par-5 11th. Miller's rounds of 71-65--136 (-8) gave him a five-stroke victory and his first FJT title.

Jimmy Stanger, of Tampa, finished in second place with rounds of 71-70--141 (-3). Stanger birdied holes 11, 12, and 17 in the final round. Henry Westmoreland, of Wacissa, finished alone in third place by shooting 72-70--142. In the final round Westmoreland made birdies on holes 1, 4, 7, and 11.

In the girls division, Yueer Feng, of Orlando took a two shot lead into Sunday after shooting a 70 (-2) in the first round. Feng, who has won over 30 FJT events since 2007, played flawless in the final by making four birdies (4, 8, 9, and 11) and no bogies in route to a 68. Feng's 70-68--138 (-6) gave her a twelve shot victory.

Kristine Odaiyar, of Ocala, finished in second place with rounds of 74-76. Dylan Kim, of Winter Garden, finished in the third place with rounds of 72-80.
