106th Amateur Heads to Turtle Creek Club

December 1, 2022

TAMPA, Fla. – Turtle Creek Club, in Tequesta, will be the host site for the 2023 Amateur Championship. Scheduled for June 8-11, 2023, the 106th Amateur Championship will be the club’s second FSGA championship.

Turtle Creek Club was designed by Joe Lee and opened for play in 1969. Considered one of Lee’s finest accomplishments, the course was redone in 2003 by Lee with a goal of remove excess undergrowth, palmetto bushes and trees to open up the course and make it more playable.

In 2016, Turtle Creek underwent an extensive renovation led by local architect Kipp Schulties to help modernize this Joe Lee masterpiece. The course will be a tough test for the 168 player that tee it up at the 106th Amateur with its open fairways and challenging greens.

The club boosts a strong membership, including PGA Tour rookie, Brandon Matthews, USGA Senior Amateur Champion Chip Lutz, and three-time FSGA Senior Player of the Year, Pete Williams.  It is also a favorite stop among local Jupiter professional, including Rickie Fowler, Lexi Thompson, Justin Thomas and Keegan Bradley.

Turtle Creek Club is set to host its first Amateur Championship and its second FSGA championship. The Tequesta played host to the 25th Amateur Match Play Championship in 2015, where TJ Shuart was crowned the champion.

The Amateur Championship has a rich history dating back to 1913 with A.C. Ulmer winning the first of his four titles. Other past champions include: Carl Dann Jr. (five-time champion), Don Bisplinghoff (four-time champion), Bob Murphy, Doug Sanders, Gary Koch, Jerry Pate, Buddy Alexander, Blayne Barber & Sam Horsfield.

After birdieing the 72nd hole of the 2022 Amateur Championship to force a playoff, Alex Vogelsong rolled in another birdie on the first playoff hole to win the 105th Amateur. This was the first FSGA championship victory for the Florida Junior Tour alum, who was the only player in the field to finish with four under-par rounds, finishing with rounds of 71-71-68-70.

Entries open for the 106th Amateur Championship will open February 2023.
