Zhang and Gibson Win Again

September 8, 2013

The Florida Junior Tour's 13-15 age division ventured to Carrollwood Country Club in Tampa, the FSGA's hometown, for one of the few remaining tournaments before the Tour Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

Playing the Meadow and Pine nines at Carrollwood CC, Haydyn Gibson took the first round lead with an impressive even par 72. Gibson, of Clearwater, started the final round with a two stroke lead and then increased that lead with a 35 on her first nine by making birdies on holes 10 and 12. Courtney Zeng, of Orlando, started the final round only two shots back, but couldn't get anything going to catch Gibson. Gibson cruised on her final nine with a 38 (74) which was go enough for a 6-shot victory and her second FJT title of 2013 (72-73--145).

Courtney Zeng finished in second place with rounds of 74-77--151. Kaely Krayeski, of Wellington, finished alone in third place with rounds of 77-75--152.

In the boys division, two players shot under par rounds in the first round to lead the field. Andy Zhang, of Reunion, shot 69 (-3) and Daniel Core, of Sorrento, shot 71 (-1).

In the final round Zhang started with a birdie on the first hole, but then made two bogeys on the front nine for a 37. William Wrigley, playing in the final group with Zhang and Core, shot a 35 (-1) on the front nine to close Zhang's lead to only one stroke.

On the back nine, Zhang, Core, and Wrigley battled back and forth for the lead. Wrigley, of Winter Garden, made birdies on holes 4, 9, 10 and 15, but a costly double bogey on the 13th hole would send him to the 18th hole tied with Zhang. On the final hole, a par 5 with an island green, Zhang made par while Wrigley made a bogey which gave Zhang a one-stroke victory with rounds of 69-74--143.

This is Andy Zhang's second win of 2013. Wrigley finished alone in second place with rounds of 72-72--144. Daniel Core finished alone in third place with rounds of 71-74--145.
