Amateur Championship heads to Quail Valley

April 28, 2014

The 97th State Amateur Championship will head to Quail Valley Golf Club, June 19-22.  Entries will close Wednesday, May 7th.  This will be the first time Quail Valley will host the Amateur, however the club is no stranger to FSGA Championships.  They have hosted the 2009 and 2013 Florida Open Championship, as well as the 2011 Boys' Junior Championship.  Quail Valley is also set to host back-to-back men's and women's U.S. Open Sectional Qualifiers, June 2nd & May 30th, respectively.

Hawk's Nest Golf Club, in Vero Beach, will serve as the co-host of the 97th Amateur.  All players qualifying for the Championship proper will play one round at each Quail Valley and Hawk's Nest on Thursday, June 19th and Friday, June 20th. The field will then be cut to the top 70 players and ties, with the final 36-holes at Quail Valley on Saturday, June 21st and Sunday, June 22nd.

In 2013, over 900 players attempted to qualify for the championship held at Jupiter Hills Club, in Jupiter.  Sixteen-year-old, Sam Horsfield of Davenport, prevailed over the field of 168 players by an astounding 11-stroke margin after the 72 hole championship.

Started in 1914, the FSGA State Amateur is the oldest continuous sporting event in the state as well as the largest amateur event in Florida.  Past State Amateur Champions include Bob Murphy, Jerry Pate, David Peoples, Chris Couch and Barry Cheeseman.
