85th Women's Amateur Begins Saturday

The FSGA Women’s Amateur Championship is set to begin this weekend at Sara Bay Country Club, June 7th to June 11th.  In its 85th year, the championship is played from approximately 6,000 yards and will host some of the top women amateur golfers in Florida.  Notable past champions include Cristie Kerr, Taffy Brower, and Meghan Stasi.
 
The format for the five day event begins with 36 holes of gross individual stroke play on Saturday and Sunday.  The field is then cut to the top 32 players compete in match play for the Championship.   Round of 32 matches will be played on Monday morning followed by Round of 16 matches Monday afternoon.  Quarterfinal matches commence Tuesday morning with Semi-final matches in the afternoon.  The 18-hole Championship match will be played on Wednesday morning.
 
Sara Bay Country Club, located in Sarasota, is no stranger to hosting talented women golfers.  Sara Bay is host to the LPGA’s Symetra Tour for its Guardian Retirement Championship, held every April.  Also deep rooted in Florida golf history, Sara Bay first opened its doors in 1926 and was soon the site of the famous match between the world's best amateur, Bobby Jones, and the best professional, Walter Hagen.  Sara Bay continues to support the Florida State Golf Association, as it has hosted numerous prestigious state championships in prior years. In 2013 they were host to the 59th Boys’ Junior Amateur Championship and they will continue to host state championships, qualifiers, and later this summer the Junior Florida Cup, July 28-29.

Players to watch this week include:

  • Meghan Stasi, of Oakland Park, is a four-time US Women’s Mid-Amateur Champion, 2013 Women’s Player-of-the-Year, and past Women’s Amateur Champion.

  • Mary Jane Hiestand, of Naples, is the 2013 Women’s Senior Player-of-the-Year and past Women’s Amateur Champion.

  • Lauren Lamm, of Punta Gorda, is the 2013 Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Champion. 

  • Emma Albrect, of Ormond Beach, advanced to quarterfinals in the 2013 Women’s Amateur and just recently missed qualifying for the US Women’s Open.  She has also committed to attend Notre Dame in the fall of 2015.
