Connelly & Yang Co-Medalists

June 8, 2014

Thirty-two of the top women amateur golfers in Florida have advanced to the match play portion of the 85th Women’s Amateur Championship at Sara Bay Country Club, on June 7-11.

After two glorious, yet hot, days of golf, Tara Connelly of Palm Beach Gardens and Athena Yang of Winter Haven, were co-medalists for the Women's Amateur stroke play qualifying. Both shooting four-over-par total of 148 for two days, Connelly shot 73-75 and Yang shot 75-73. Both were very consistent and had strong short games throughout the weekend, as they are needed on the difficult Donald Ross design. Connelly represented Florida last fall at the US Women's State Team Championship and is the 2014 Women's International Four-Ball Champion with fellow-competitor and friend, Meghan Stasi of Oakland Park. Connelly will face Maria Marino, of Coral Springs, in the Round of 32 Matches.  Yang just recently finished second at the Florida Junior Tour Major at Orange County National, and has consistently finished in the top-10 for the last two seasons. Lauren Waidner, of Fleming Island, will be Yang's first opponent in Monday's morning Round of 32 matches.

Other notables that have advanced to the match play portion include, Meghan Stasi of Oakland Park, who is the 2010 and 2012 Women’s Amateur past champion, a four-time US Women's Mid-Amateur Champion, and the 2013 Florida Women's Player-of-the-Year.  Stasi also just recently won the Women's International Four-Ball Championship with Connelly and was also part of the Florida team at the US Women's State Team Championship. Stasi will play against 7th seed Emma Albrecht, of Ormond Beach, in Monday morning’s Round of 32 matches.  Albrecht, who has committed to play for Notre Dame in the fall of 2015, played very consistently during the last two days; shooting 75-76-151.  Alex Milan, of Lutz, came back Sunday with a three-under-par 69 after opening with an 83.  Milan will be a senior this fall at Florida State University where she has helped lead her team with a 74.44 scoring average this past year. Milan will be competing in the Ladies British Open Amateur at the end of the month.

The competitors will face single elimination matches beginning with the Round of 32 matches to be played on Monday morning, and then Round of 16 matches following Monday afternoon.  Quarter-final matches will be played Tuesday morning, with Semi-final matches played in the afternoon on Tuesday.  The final 18 hole Championship match will be played on Wednesday morning.
