State Mid-Amateur Championship Field Completed

August 4, 2004

After nine qualifiers across the state, the Florida State Mid-Amateur Championship field is now complete.

This year’s field features the 2003 Champion, Ryan Konkus, of Hobe Sound, who defeated Peter Dachisen, of Wesley Chapel, 1 up, in last year's Championship match to win the title. Konkus, along with semi-finalists Mark Leetzow, of Sarasota, and Michael Nealy, of Boca Raton, received exempt status into this year’s Championship. Rick Barger, of Merritt Island, who recently won the State Mid-Senior, also earned exempt status with that Championship win. Two-time State Senior Champion, Joseph Cristillo, of Crystal River, will compete in the Championship after he qualified at The Club at Eaglebrook as well as 2003 State Amateur Champion Richard Maddox, of Panama City, who received exempt status. Michael Nealy, Andy Purnell and Rick Woulfe, the three players who represented Florida in the USGA State Team Championship will also play in the Mid-Amateur Championship.

To be eligible for the State Mid-Amateur, participants must be 25 years of age or older. More than 350 entries were received for this year’s Championship. Participants competed in nine qualifiers in an 18-hole stroke play format to attempt to advance to the Championship. The Championship consists of 36-holes of stroke play qualifying over the first two days with the lowest 16 advancing to the match play on Saturday and Sunday.
